Maternal-Fetal Medicine for High-Risk Pregnancies
For most expectant mothers, pregnancy is an exciting and joyful experience, and in many cases, it progresses smoothly. However, some pregnancies require closer monitoring due to specific health concerns. In such cases, an obstetrician may recommend consulting with a Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) specialist.
What is Maternal-Fetal Medicine?
Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists, also known as perinatologists, are obstetricians with advanced training in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of high-risk pregnancies. They specialize in caring for both mother and baby when there is an increased risk of complications.
Why Might You Be Referred to an MFM Specialist?
A referral to an MFM specialist is often a precautionary measure and should not cause undue concern. It does not necessarily mean that your pregnancy will be complicated or that your baby will have health issues. Instead, the goal is to provide expert monitoring and care to ensure the healthiest possible outcome for both mother and baby.
Services Provided by Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists
MFM specialists offer a range of advanced diagnostic and monitoring services, including:
✅ Comprehensive maternal and fetal care
✅ High-resolution ultrasound examinations
✅ Genetic testing and counseling
✅ State-of-the-art diagnostic procedures
✅ Fetal well-being assessments and monitoring
Coordinated Care for the Best Outcome
As your due date approaches, the MFM specialist will work closely with:
Your obstetrician, who will oversee your prenatal care and delivery.
A neonatologist, if needed, to provide specialized care for your baby after birth.
This collaborative approach ensures that both mother and baby receive the highest level of care, even in cases where complications may arise.
